Giving back is extremely important to me. Many themes in The Prince & the Protester were inspired by my desire to increase awareness of the evils of fascism, extremism, and inequality. In honor of publishing The Prince & the Protester, I’ve donated to the following charitable causes:
As the largest gun violence prevention organization in the USA, Everytown advocates for gun control and works to end gun violence.
Why I donate: Since the book does include some gun violence, I think it’s important to offset that with a positive contribution to society aimed at ending gun violence, particularly in schools. I strongly oppose gun violence and believe we need stricter laws to protect children and families.
The Asian American Foundation (TAAF)
The Asian American Foundation advances safety, belonging, and prosperity for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Why I donate: In The Prince & the Protester, the kingdom of Hyo Bay is inspired by Joseon-era Korea. I believe it’s important to give back to the communities we draw inspiration from in material ways, beyond mere representation. In writing P&P, I sought to move away from the traditional Medieval Europe-inspired fantasy world, but I also wanted to avoid drawing on stereotypes or misrepresentation.
National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC)
The National Immigrant Justice Center keeps families together, frees people from the dangers of immigrant detention, and prevents asylum seekers and long-time community members from being deported based on unjust laws and illegal government actions. Their mission is to establish and defend the legal rights of immigrants regardless of background and transform the immigration system to one that affords equal opportunity for all. NIJC combines four strategies to defend access to justice for immigrants and their loved ones, while working to transform the immigration system into one that upholds human rights: direct legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and strategic communications.
Why I donate: A major storyline in The Prince & the Protester involves the State’s unfair treatment of immigrants from Vesora, a fantasy realm accessed through portals. This offers a not-so-subtle commentary on our own current treatment of immigrants. I want to support modern-day, real-world immigrants against unfair treatment.
