Fashion in The Guardian

What are the real-world inspirations for fashion in The Guardian?

Iliya’s home village

Iliya’s village has a retro-futuristic Medieval/Renaissance peasant vibe: fabrics like leather and wool, accessories like rucksacks and chunky belts, with modern undergarments like bras. Iliya wears lots of long woolen skirts and earthy neutral colors.

Ziya (desert village)

Ziyans wear all-white, light fabrics that can be grown in the desert, and they cover lots of skin to shield from the sun.

Pan epicenter

Inspired by India, Pan fashions resemble a futuristic version of Indian fashions today.

Reth, who hails from future Amritsar, wears a cotton-silk kurta (collarless shirt) and salwar pants (wide at the top, narrow at the ankle, with cuffed bottoms) when he first meets Iliya. He later wears cotton-silk kurta pajamas. As inspiration for Reth’s fashion, I admired designs by Antar Agni.

His sister Amithi wears an ombre lehenga featuring dabka embroidery paired with an embroidered blouse and dupatta. For Amithi, I studied fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani. As a budding fashionista, Amithi wears bold, multicolored outfits with embroidery and embellishments.

Alisha is more centrally located in the Pan epicenter, but she’s also a more practical and understated dresser than Amithi. Alisha prefers simple saris and blouse-skirt combos, with colors that are carefully chosen to suit the environment.

Toyosoni epicenter

The Toyosoni epicenter is inspired by future-Japan. At an elegant banquet, attendees dress in lavish ballgowns and formal suits. In business meetings, attendees (of all genders) overwhelmingly wear suits. Iliya sticks out like a sore thumb in her woolen skirt!

P&C epicenter

In P&C inspired by future-USA, we see varying degrees of business casual. An assistant wears a royal blue skirt-suit, and the CEO wears a dusky rose skirt-suit inspired by Chanel. A male executive wears a blue button-down over dark jeans. Grayce, a prophet with a louder personality, wears red scarves “criss-crossed over her body.”

Villages outside P&C

In a village inspired by future-Oaxaca, villagers wear robes clasped in front with metal fasteners. Traditional Oaxacan culture also inspires the jewelry and accessories.
